Down Under Ep1: Spaceship to planet 4X... Mate

G'Day Mate, How you going?

So after the most uncomfortable flight in the world we finally arrived in Sydney, and at the Blue Parrot Guesthouse. Next day it was time to hit the town, Japanese tourist style. Camera in hand we walked around the entire city soaking up everything from the Opera House to the southern parts of the CBD. We also took the opportunity to do some shopping. Being in Australia, home of surfing we wanted to be draped in Quikslilver, Billabong and Rip Curl. Being in Australia we thought they would have surf shops on every corner... but no! To find surf shops you really have to go out of your way. We spent a very nice evening with a Lenni and Dennis, a friend I met on an airplane from the UK to Finland. But the next day we unfortunately came down with a stomach and regular flu which had us back on antibiotics again. Two days later, cured and energised we headed out to Bondi beach. When we got there both of us thought it looked really familiar. It turns out we have both skated on Bondi beach before, many times actually. Bondi Beach is one of the best levels in the skateboarding video game Tony Hawk: Undergroud 2... we really are nerds at heart! Decked out in the latest surf fashion and having past a beginners course in Aussie (which is not English, really) it was time to get a camper so we could head up the coast. We finally struck gold when we got one of the best campers you can get at a very discounted price as long as we started off in Brisbane. The company even flew us up to Brizzie for free!

We arrived in Brisbane on the 26th of March and spent the afternoon in St.John's Cathedral to light candels for Micki's uncle who tragically past away a month ago. The next day we walked around Brisbane and stopped off at the city beach which is a perfect sand beach built onto a swimming pool right on the river. In the afternoon we took a tour of the Castlemain Brewery and found Australia's best beer: XXXX Gold and XXXX Bitter! Beautiful Mate!!! Finally the next day we got our Spaceship Campervan. It's basically a huge Toyota with a fridge, water tanks, double bed, DVD player + screen and all the comforts you could ask for. It also has a name and much to Micki's delight, ours is called “War God”. With our own set of superwheels it was time to head down the coast to the legendary Byron Bay but not without scratching an itch on the way. We stopped off at Ikea and had a big plate of Swedish meat balls, lingonberry jam and mashed potatoes! We also bought some Kalle's Kaviar, Salted Herring, Daim candy, Pickles and some bits and pieces for the Spaceship.

The first drive was a bit shaky what with driving on the wrong side of the road but in the end we arrived in Byron Bay unscathed. We checked out the eastern most point in Australia, got through our first nights of camping and checked out the beach. Unfortunately a large storm has decided to settle on the entire eastern seaboard so there has been very heavy rain and it should continue for a week so we've decided to drive inland and do some non beach stuff for a while.

All pictures from Bali to Byron Bay are up (including mine from KL and Singapore) so enjoy!!!

Till next time,

Robbe & Micki
