Down Under Episode 5: Micki's version of the truth

I guess I'll have to write a post as well, since Rob can't do it for me. So, when Rob left for his diving trip I had 4 days to myself and wanted to fill them with a little of everything. I started my “time off” with a trip to the Great Barrier Reef. The Passions of Paradise is a catamaran sailing ship that makes snorkeling day trips to the reef so it was perfect for me. I didn't get to see any sharks but I saw plenty of beautiful fish including, Giant Trevally (look like Tunafish), Parrotfish, Batfish and Giant Clams. I even got to catch some last sun on the deck before our trip to New Zealand.

On the second day I did some shopping (shoes for my sister) and I also spent some time finalizing my tan by the lagoon with some new found friends from the hostel. After my R&R session it was time to move about a little so I booked a trip to the Daintree which is up by Cape Tribulation. The Daintree is the worlds oldest forest (about 250 million years old) and is one of the only places where the rain forest comes right down to a beautiful beach. The rain forest is also one of the only places in the world that has maintained the same climate for the last quarter of a billion years even through the ice ages. The forest itself was beautiful as were the beaches. We also made a trip up the Daintree river to find some crocodiles and we did find a resident croc called Fat Albert. He is 5 meters long and happened to be out catching some sun while we cruised by.

On my last day of freedom I wanted to experience some aboriginal culture so I took a ride out to the Tjapukai Aboriginal Culture Center. The Aboriginals in Australia are not held with high regard so I wanted to see life through their eyes and maybe understand them a little better. We watched a movie about their history as well as their culture and afterwards we were treated to a dance performance. There were not many of us in the crowd so all of a sudden we were pulled up on stage and had to join in the singing and dancing. It was actually quite fun and we managed a song and dance without too much embarrassment. We also got to throw boomerangs and spears after a crash course in fire-making. All in all it was a really fun day!

So there you go, that is what I got up to.

Greetings from cold but fun Queenstown,
Micki

PS. Rob's photos are up now as well.
