Texas and the South

Greetings from Atlanta, Georgia! That's where we are now and as you probably guessed, the following text is all about how we got here!

We decided not to go to El Paso because we had better things to do. Roswell, New Mexico just seemed like too cool a place to miss out on so we headed there. Roswell is a very quirky and very entertaining place. Everything, and I mean everything is about UFOs and aliens. We had dinner at an awesome diner with alien decor and the next day we enjoyed the International UFO Museum and Research Center. The visit was crowned by the street lamps, which are shaped like alien heads. Great!

With New Mexico behind us it was time to go where everything is big! I think I can safely say that Texas is one of our favorite places of the trip so far! Why? Because everyone is just so darn friendly! We began with Austin, where we did some boot scootin' at the Broken Spoke. One of the best and most famous dance halls in the US. We also visited the Capitol and wondered around the city in the scorching heat (40 C / 104 F). The next stop was San Antonio where we enjoyed the Riverwalk, the Alamo, San Fernando Cathedral and the Market Square. For our second day we headed out into the hills for a visit to Gruene and Bandera. Both are charming Texas villages and we felt right at home. In the evening we enjoyed a Rodeo which was an awesome time! Then unfortunately our time in Texas was drawing to a close but the day we left we just had to stop off in Stockdale for the annual Watermelon Jubilee. The coolest fair ever! With live ponies in the merry-go-round, a watermelon eating contest, rattlesnake stand and plenty of spicy food it was everything we had hoped it would be.

Over 500 miles later we were in New Orleans aka The Big Easy. The signs of the hurricane are still there but you can really tell the city is bouncing back. We loved the street performers, drank beer on Bourbon Street and suffered through the delicious but very spicy food. The French quarter is just stunning and the Graveyard offers a lot of surprises and some very interesting graves, one of which is the resting place of Marie Leveau, the most famous voodoo queen of all time. It is also the third most visited grave in the US after John F. Kennedy and Elvis. After two great days it was time to leave the insufferable heat behind us and head north towards Atlanta. We hadn't originally planned to go there but when we found out that the Braves were hosting the Yankees and we could get tickets to enjoy America's most popular past time, we just had to go. Tickets in hand we stepped into Turner Field with the other 40 000 fans and witnessed the Yankees get creamed! What a great experience for a Red Socks fan. If things really go my way then all my US teams will win their respective championships! Steelers took the Superbowl, The Penguins won the Stanley Cup and the Lakers took home the NBA Play-offs. Now it's up to the Red Socks!

Tomorrow we are off to Savannah which is step one on our drive up the coast.

Till next time, which might just be the last time!

bobby and micki, oscie and evan were here for 3 days and left today and send their love. she looks fwd to seeing you both!

Saw your pictures of Charleston. Chief Osceola, leader of the Seminole Indians against Andrew Jackson, half Scottish and illegitmate, and a great warrior was imprisoned in Fort Moultrie out in the harbour. I visited 35 years ago the private home on Atlantic Street where Osceola allegedly stayed for a while. Grandpa served in the Pacific in WWII in the command and communications tower of the Yorktown which is now a museum in the harbour. In law school I went to a dance with a girl from Charleston. Her name was Annieboo. A fine town! Father's went to naval school before WWII just near Savannah. A lot of fine memories! Love, Tom
